All first graders in each of the four classes have time set aside each school day to work on their Independent Study Projects. Students pick a topic of their choice, conduct research on the topic, and work towards a culminating project that will showcase what they have learned. These projects will then be shared with the rest of the class and perhaps to an even greater audience – such as the rest of the school, parents or even community members.

The Bear Cubs have also partnered with Mr. Steve’s fourth grade students – their Study Buddies – to expand on this work. The two classes meet once a week during which they also utilize the school library to find resources.
Groups/pairings are subject to change based on our interests and compatibility. Below is how our groups have morphed.
Step 2: How do we want to show what we have learned?
Step 3: Reflect. Edit. Revise.
Step 4: Thinking critically. We have learned a lot! What do we still want to know? Do we want to keep the same topics or switch to something new? What questions do we have? How can our Study Buddies help us research? How can our Study Buddies help us with our final projects?
Step 5: Reflect- How were our resources helpful to us?
Taking initiative! Proactive learners -->
